The Railroad Museum of Long Island celebrated 30 years in Riverhead Town with this year’s Riverhead Railroad Festival, which took place over the weekend at the museum on Griffing Avenue, just north of the Long Island Railroad track near the Riverhead train station.
RMLI was founded in 1990 and established a location in Greenport in 1990 in the historic 1892 freight house of the Long Island Rail Road. The organization expanded to Riverhead in 1996.
There’s always lots to see and do at the festival for kids of all ages (including adults) who love trains and railroad history. The museum offers a historic Lionel Layout and operating toy train layouts, rides on the 1964 -1965 LIRR World’s Fair park train and lots more, including vendors, barbecue and live music.
