Two people were injured in a crash between a Suffolk Transit minibus and an SUV at the intersection of Northville Turnpike and Middle Road at about 2:50 p.m. today.
The bus overturned in the crash. It was carrying no passengers at the time of the accident.
Police said the SUV was westbound on Middle Road and had a red light, according to witnesses at the scene who reported seeing the SUV stopped at the red light and then enter the intersection, according to an officer. The SUV broadsided the bus, knocking it on its side.
Riverhead Fire Department responded to the scene with a heavy rescue unit to remove the driver from the bus.
The female driver of the SUV and the male driver of the bus were both taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
Northville Turnpike and Middle Road were closed to traffic in both directions.
