Riverhead Police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found last night in a “tent encampment” in a wooded area between Pulaski Street and West Main Street in Riverhead.
Police said they received a call for a medical emergency last night at 10:51 p.m. involving an unconscious and unresponsive man in a tent encampment located in a wooded area near the railroad tracks south of Riverhead Building Supply on Pulaski Street.
Responding police officers and Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps EMTs determined upon arrival that the man was deceased, according to a police press release issued early this morning.
Riverhead police detectives and the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office were notified and responded to investigate.
Police interviewed other people who live in the tent encampment there and learned that the deceased man was known only as “Oscar,” according to the press release.
Police described Oscar as a white Hispanic male, in his 40s or 50s, approximately 5’-4” tall and approximately 150 pounds.
He was found to be wearing multiple layers of clothing and jackets, blue jeans and black boots, police said.
No foul play is suspected at this time but the investigation is ongoing, police said.
The Riverhead Police Department asks anyone with information about the full name of the deceased man known as “Oscar,” and/or the circumstances that contributed to his death, to contact the police at (631)727-4500. All calls will be kept confidential, police said.
