On Monday, a harbor seal was spotted swimming in the Peconic River at the entrance to the new fish ladder just installed by the town. The seal was apparently feeding on the alewives making their annual migration up the river to spawn in the protected fresh water pond west of the new fishway.

The same seal was apparently sighted behind the Main Street aquarium and on a dock at Larry’s Lighthouse Marina in Aquebogue in the past few days. Kowalik said reports of these sightings were made to the Foundation to report the seal, believing it was injured or stranded, but she said the seal seemed to be in good health.
