At a ceremony on Monday at 11a.m, the U.S. Postal Service will rename the Riverhead Post Office in honor of Private First Class Garfield Langhorn, a Riverhead resident who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism during the Vietnam War.
Mary Langhorn, mother of PFC Langhorn, will attend the ceremony and will be presented with a copy of the legislation bearing the signatures of President Obama, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and the late President Pro Tempore of the Senate Robert Byrd, as well as the pen President Obama used to sign the legislation.
Also on hand will be Rep. Tim Bishop, who sponsored the legislation to rename the facility in honor of Langhorn, and local elected officials, and veterans groups. Bishop’s bill was introduced with the bipartisan support of New York’s entire congressional delegation and signed into law on June 9.
