An electrical transformer on a Roanoke Avenue utility pole exploded shortly before 11 a.m. today, downing a live wire on Roanoke and knocking out the traffic signal at the intersection of Route 58 and Harrison Avenue.
Riverhead firefighters and town police repsonded to the scene of the burning downed wire at 1380 Roanoke Avenue, just north of McGann-Mercy High School. Police redirected traffic, while they waited for a LIPA crew to arrive.
Police were also stationed at the Route 58/Harrison Avenue intersection while the signal was out.
The unknown cause of the explosion is under investigation. One emergency worker speculated it might have been related to last night’s electrical storm.
