Head-on crash shuts Rt. 25, three hospitalized

(UPDATED — 4:03 p.m.) A head-on collision on Route 25 in Calverton this morning sent two women to Peconic Bay Medical Center and one man to Stony Brook University Medical Center with serious injuries.

Emily Bongiorno, 19, of Mount Sinai was driving a red Jeep heading east on Route 25 at 10:45 a.m. when she crossed over the double yellow line and swerved into the oncoming lane of traffic, according to police. Her car collided head-on with a westbound green Jeep driven by Richard Matheson, 58, of Hauppauge. His 55-year-old wife, Jacqueline Matheson, was in the passenger seat.

Three fire trucks from the Riverhead fire department responded to the scene. Firefighters had to use the “jaws of life” rescue equipment to remove the roof from the green Jeep and the door from the red Jeep to free the occupants of both cars. Ambulances from both the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the Wading River Fire Department responded to the scene.

Both women were sent to Peconic Bay Medical Center, and the male driver was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center by a Suffolk MedEvac helicopter.

The accident took place in front of Peconic Propoane and has shut down both lanes of traffic on 25 from Edwards Avenue to Fresh Pond Road.
