Riverhead firefighters responded to reports of smoke this afternoon inside Riverhead Beverage on Osborn Avenue.

The oil burner had backed up, causing a puff-back that spread smoke throughout the store, according to Fire Chief Nick Luparella. The building was evacuated.

Firefighters expelled the smoke from the store with two large fans positioned at two entrances of the building.

There was minimal smoke damage done to the store. None of the merchandise was affected. “Everything’s alright,” said store owner Kevin McKillop. “We’re back open for business.”

Two fire trucks responded to the scene.
