The Peconic River crested its banks downtown Thursday afternoon due to the combination of heavy rains and the astronomical high tide. The flooding prompted Riverhead Police to shut down the parking lot on East Main Street along the riverfront.
Riverhead received at least two inches of rain in today’s heavy rainfall, said Riverhead Highway Superintendent George Woodson.
No trees came down and there was no major roadway flooding, Woodson said.
“There was one trouble spot on Roanoke Avenue, but that was it,” the highway superintendent said. “We were lucky with this one, because one inch of rain turns into 10 inches of snow if the temperature is low enough.”
