The Riverhead High School varsity cheerleading team placed first in a competition last Saturday in Scarsdale, NY.
The cheerleaders placed first in both the small varsity division against 12 other teams and the grand championship against all 24 teams in their division, according to a press release issued by the school district this morning.
“I think that – the past two weeks especially – they’ve been really progressing,” said head cheerleading coach Stephanie Piraino in an interview after the competition. “They’ve been coming to every single practice, pushing through the entire practice and progressing every single day. They’ve been really conscious of consistency.”
The Scarsdale competition marks their first first-place trophy of the year. The team has already competed this fall at Hofstra and placed fourth out of eight teams. Their performance at Hofstra qualified them for the Cheersport Nationals competition in Atlanta, GA, where they will be competing this spring.
“After we won, they actually took a picture Tebowing with the trophy, which was kind of funny,” said Piraino. “A lot of the kids were asking us, ‘You’re that school?’ We were like, ‘Yeah, that’s us.'”
The team’s final local competition will take place on January 28 in Eastchester, NY.
