A woman was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center after a single-car crash near the intersection of Northville Turnpike and East Avenue Friday evening.
Police identified Mary Hattorff, 48, as the driver and sole occupant of a white Dodge Avenger that was southbound on Northville Turnpike at approximately 6:30 p.m.
Police said Hattorff lost control of her car, which careened through a pile of debris at the southeast corner of Northville Turnpike and East Avenue, the site of an abandoned house that caught fire and was subsequently torn down by the Riverhead Highway Department in February. See story.
The vehicle then continued across East Avenue, just south of Northville Turnpike, before ultimately being stopped by the guide-wire of a utility pole, police said.
Hattorff was treated at the scene by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps, which then transported the victim to the Riverhead High School parking lot, where the Riverhead Fire Department secured a landing zone for the Suffolk County Police helicopter.
Hattorff sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash, according to Riverhead Police Lt. David Lessard.
