The Riverhead Board of Education approved a resolution to fund the high school’s Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps in the event federal funding is interrupted by the government shutdown.
“We haven’t received notification yet, it just comes under that umbrella of what could be cut,” said Superintendent Nancy Carney. “Chances are they would just slow the funding until they finally pass the legislation, so we wanted to be sure we could continue the funding if anything happened to jeopardize it.”
During the meeting Carney congratulated the 55-member unit on its third place finish at the JROTC Drill Meet at SUNY Maritime College on Sept. 28. The unit’s color guard and unarmed platoon both came in first place in their categories, Carney said.
