One airlifted, two others sent to hospital after Rt. 58 crash

Three people were injured in a two-car crash on Route 58 in front of the Dick’s Sporting Goods shopping center at around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

One man was airlifted to Stony Brook Medical Center with head injuries and another man and woman were taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

A witness who heard the loud crash said it sounded like a “huge piece of glass fell.” The collision ripped off the door of one of the vehicles, a silver SUV.

Vinny Setteducato, a DCM Construction worker who was working on a new Starbucks building at the corner near the crash, said he heard it happen. He said the silver SUV was turning into the shopping center from the westbound lanes when it was struck by a black Dodge Durango heading eastbound.

The teenage driver of the Durango was able to exit his vehicle after a few minutes, Setteducato said. A male in the other vehicle was airlifted to Stony Brook with head injuries and was conscious as he was transported, according to police.

Police said no citations were issued.

The eastbound roadway was closed east of Kroemer Avenue while the scene was cleared and traffic was slowed on Kroemer Avenue and onto Route 25 as traffic was redirected.

Riverhead Fire Department Heavy Rescue, Peconic Bay Medical Center First Response, Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the Mattituck Fire Department responded.
