2013 0821 star registration

There may be 15 more shopping days till Christmas, but did you know there are just 22 more days to register for your STAR property tax exemption?

All homeowners currently receiving a Basic STAR exemption have until Dec. 31 to register with the New York State Tax Department in order to receive the exemption in 2014 and subsequent years, under legislation adopted by state lawmakers this spring.

The information provided will be used by the tax department to monitor homeowners’ eligibility in future years, according to the agency’s website.

According to the department, 69 percent of homeowners on Long Island have registered so far, leaving 175,000 who have not.

To register, apply online or call (518) 457-2036. Note: The town assessors cannot complete the registration of homeowners for basic STAR required by the new law.

New homeowners wishing to apply can do so online. Eligibility requires owning your home, which must be your principal residence, and earning less than $500,000 annually.

Senior citizens receiving the Enhanced STAR benefit are not subject to the new requirement, but must continue to apply annually or participate in the income verification program in order to ensure they will continue to receive the exemption.
