Turkeys, trimmings and toys were sorted and arranged into holiday gift baskets by Riverhead Police Benevolent Association members Friday at the Riverhead Town municipal garage, a tradition president Dixon Palmer said has been going on for close to 20 years.
“We get the names through one of the Riverhead schools, and St. John’s [the Baptist in Wading River] ministries gives us families also,” Dixon said.
Dixon said the cops break up into teams and deliver the dinner baskets directly to the families. It’s one of the officers’ more pleasant duties, he said.
Between 26 and 30 families will be served, a few more than last year.
“It’s not just a one-day process; it takes a few days and nights to pull it all together,” Dixon said.
The PBA will also be presenting a $500 check to the L.I. Council of Churches food pantry on Osborn Avenue next week.
