Riverhead Parks and Recreation Superintendent Ray Coyne was recently honored by Cornell Cooperative Extension’s family health and wellness program as an “outstanding community partner.”

Coyne, along with  Brookhaven Parks and Recreation Superintend Kurt Leuffen were recognized at CCE’s 98th annual meeting and recognition program on Nov. 29.

The yearly event celebrates the successes and accomplishments of the year, board and advisory board members are elected and the organization honors publicly our staff, outstanding volunteers, and collaborators.

Coyne has been an active and supportive project collaborator, working closely with of Creating Healthy Places project coordinator Susan Wilk to improve Stotzky Park.

“Ray enthusiastically came on board a little over four years ago and his passion for making Stotzky Park a family destination for physical activity has been so motivational,” Wilk said.

“Kurt and Ray have been instrumental in the Creating Healthy Places in Suffolk County’s park promotion and enhancement initiative. Their passion for the betterment of the parks in their communities makes it a pleasure to work and create healthier places with them,” Wilk said.

“Ray does a great job,” Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walter said. “He’s brought the rec department to a whole new level. And coming from the corporate world, Ray understands business. He understands that these programs have to be regularly reviewed and assessed. He keeps everything new and fresh all the time,” Walter said.
im very happy with the programs

The Town of Riverhead will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Stotzky Park this spring to unveil an enhanced walking trail with bollard lights, signage, trail markers and water fountains, funded through the Creating Healthy Places collaborative. In addition to enhancing the parks spaces for walking new fitness programs will be introduced to the community.

“It was a tremendous honor,” Coyne said of the award. “I really appreciate it.”
