The polls are open today at the Riverhead Free Library for residents to vote on the library’s proposed 2015-2016 budget.
The proposed budget calls for a $3.58 million operating budget, up from $3.5 million last year.
The 3 percent tax levy increase would amount to an increase of less than $2.94 per household per year, according to a budget information document published by the library.
When voters go to the polls on the library budget proposal, they are technically voting on a contract between the Riverhead Central School District and the Riverhead library management association. The library is not a separate taxing district. The library vote has traditionally been held separately from the school district budget vote, as allowed by state law.
Last year’s budget was approved by a vote of 172 to 87, with a total of 259 voters turning out at the polls.
Riverhead Central School District taxpayers can vote on the budget between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. today in the library meeting room.
The library offers hundreds of programs every year for all age groups, as well as English Second Language (ESL) classes, summer reading programs and story-times for children. The library also offers educational programs for adults, including computer instruction, health information and career guidance.
