Several local fire departments knocked down a major brush fire in Westhampton this morning.

The fire was under control as of 11:25 a.m., according to Flanders Fire Department Chief Joe Petit.

The fire began just after 10 a.m. on Old Riverhead Road south of Sunrise Highway, Petit said. Fire departments from Riverhead, Flanders, Wading River, Jamesport were called on mutual aid.

Several other fire departments also responded.

Smell of smoke from the fire has been reported throughout Riverhead this morning as far north as Calverton.

“This isn’t really considered brush fire season,” Petit said. “But conditions are so dry right now.” He pointed out that the fire danger risk today was assessed only at “moderate.”

“We’re supposed to be getting rain tonight, so that’s a good thing,” he added.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, he said.

Updates to follow.
