Organizers of the Edgar Allan Poe Festival, back for a second year this Halloween weekend, are seeking actors, dancers and performers.

“We need dancers, singers, actors, stage managers, Poe People to inhabit the streets in costume, spooky Storytellers to entertain children, Parade Participants, behind the scenes people to help in all areas,” festival founder Sal St. George said in a press release. “In other words,” he said, “the more the merrier.”

The Poe festival is holding auditions Tuesday, Aug. 18 at Riverhead Free Library, 330 Court Street, Riverhead.

St. George is also looking to sign up volunteer authors to speak at the festival about Poe and his influence on their own work. They will be invited to read excerpts from their own books as well as Poe’s poems and short stories. They can offer their books for sale at a table in a designated area set aside for book sales.

The festival has a “hidden component,” according to a press release. “Our secret agenda is to encourage youngsters to read, write, be creative and use their imaginations.”

Last year the festival featured 23 authors who did readings and gave talks.

An author’s “personal experience in the literary world can be the motivating factor needed to encourage today’s youngsters to embrace the wonderful world of literature,” the press release said.

The Second Annual Poe Festival will take place in downtown Riverhead Oct. 30, 31 and Nov. 1.
