Jamesport volunteer firefighters tonight responded to their second chimney fire in 10 days.
Jamesport Fire Department was called to North Apollo Drive tonight at 6:36 p.m. when the chimney caught fire.
Firefighters extinguished the remaining fire in the homeowner’s wood-burning stove and chimney and deployed a squad onto the roof and extinguished embers that had been blown out onto the roof, gutters and surrounding yard, according to Chief John Andrejack.
The scene was declared under control and the fire marshall is investigating, Jamesport Fire Department said in a press release.
Andrejack credited the firefighters’ quick response with stopping the fire before it spread beyond the chimney.
“One of the main problems with chimney fires is that they blow fiery embers like a volcano out all over the roof and yard,” Andrejack said in a press release. “Putting them out quickly stops the potentially devastating spread of the fire.”
He said the large fire at Maidstone Landing last year started with a fireplace.
Fire is not the only risk from chimneys that are not properly maintained. The Jamesport Fire Department’s first call of the new year was a carbon monoxide call due to a blocked chimney.
