Though Riverhead may be a spring chicken compared to other East End towns, the town is approaching its 225th birthday next year.
To celebrate, a series of year-round events are being discussed for 2017, including a Fourth of July parade, a colonial-era ball and educational events on local history.
An Independence Day parade in Riverhead would be the first in “many years,” said Town Historian Georgette Case, who is organizing the events.
She is seeking a committee of volunteers to brainstorm ideas for the year-long celebration, as well as volunteers with photo and design skills to create posters, programs and souvenir calendars.
Many of the events would feature themes from early local history. A colonial ball would encourage participants to dress in colonial-era outfits and feature music from the time period. Case also plans to set up talks throughout the year on local history.
The town’s 225th Anniversary Committee will meet for the first time February 3 at 1 and 5 p.m. at the Riverhead United Methodist Church on Main Street. Anyone interested in getting involved can attend.
