Jamesport Fire Department extinguished a shed on fire this morning after a passerby noticed smoke coming from inside.
At around 5:45 a.m., Jamesport Fire Department responded to a call for a shed fire on Front Street in South Jamesport. Firefighters arrived on the scene by 5:50 a.m. and found a shed on fire behind the house. The fire was quickly extinguished before it could spread.
Riverhead Fire Marshalls are investigating the cause of the fire. The fire may have been caused by self-combustion of soiled rags in the shed, according to a Jamesport Fire Department press release.
Chief John Andrejack of the Jamesport Fire Department credits the citizen’s awareness and quick thinking with averting a larger incident and reminds residents not to store oily rags.
