Riverhead wins first-round playoff game in shootout, defeats West Babylon 2-1

Shannon Schmidt #12 celebrates

It was deja-vu all over again as the Riverhead Blue Waves won their second shootout this week, this one over West Babylon in the first round of the field hockey playoffs, lifting them to a 2-1 victory.

The three goals scored in the shootout were by Kayla Kielbasa, Rease Coleman and the game winner by #12 Shannon Schmidt — who also scored the game-winner Thursday afternoon against Huntington.

The first half saw two evenly matched teams playing hard in each other’s offensive zones and solid on the defensive end. The second half of the game started the same with both teams getting equal chances at scoring. West Babylon broke the 0-0 tie with a high shot from about 10 feet out in front of the net to make it 1-0. With about four minutes remaining in the game, Leah Zenk put a rebound past the West Babylon keeper to tie the score at 1-1.

After two overtime periods without a goal, Schmidt put the shot past the West Babylon keeper to win the shootout for Riverhead 3-2, breaking the tie, and giving the Waves an incredible 2-1 victory.

The Riverhead girls played a flawless game throughout. Next up are the top-seeded Ward Melville Patriots who were 14-0 during the regular season. The game is at Ward Melville High School at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, October 24. Go Blue Waves!
