Riverhead firefighters are battling a large barn fire off Twomey Avenue in Calverton. The barn was engulfed in flames this morning when Riverhead Police and Riverhead Fire Department raced to the scene.

A tall column of black smoke was visible for miles around as the storage barn was became fully involved in fire.

The heat and flames from the huge fire threatened a nearby home and a lot of tractors and farm equipment around the barn. Firefighters worked to protect the home from the fire. Propane tanks inside the barn were exploding.

Riverhead volunteer firefighters responded to the alarm at 10:10 a.m. with engines, a ladder truck and other apparatus. Wading River and Ridge fire departments were called to the scene for assistance. Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded to the scene.

The fire was declared under control at 10:59 a.m.  The barn and its contents were completely destroyed.

The barn was unoccupied when the fire erupted. The homeowner said he’d been in the barn earlier this morning. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Riverhead fire marshal, according to Riverhead Fire Department Chief Kevin Brooks.
