The Riverhead High School National Junior ROTC unit shined again in its last competition of the school year. Cadet Kathleen Doherty wrote a press release describing the awards and honors the unit won at the drill meet.
Riverhead NJROTC competed in the Long Island Drill Competition on May 13. At their last drill meet of the year, senior cadets stepped out as competitors and gave next year’s leadership team the chance to shine.
For the past two months, cadets have arrived at school and hour early and stayed an hour late to practice and prepare their routines. Senior cadets assumed the role of mentors at these practices and helped the teams improve. At the drill competition, four Riverhead senior cadets were given the opportunity to perform as judges.
“’It’s been a great year for the unit, and there’s quite a lot of talent in the upcoming staff. They have a high drive for improvement and competing, and I believe the unit has a bright future for the next few years,’ said senior Gregg Grothmann.
The unit took home four new trophies from the drill meet to add to its extensive collection. The Riverhead NJROTC cadets eagerly await the 2017-2018 school year to attend, to compete, and, most ideally, to win their drill competitions.
