The Riverhead Central School District has again been designated a focus district by the State Education Department, with all but one of its schools — Aquebogue Elementary School — designated by the state as “focus schools.”
The designation is a result of the 2015 and 2016 state assessments in English Language Arts and math for students in grades 3 to 8, School Superintendent Nancy Carney said in a letter mailed to district families.
Carney said more than 30 percent of the district’s students opted out of the assessments both years, “so the designation is not representative of our entire student population.”
“As a district we continue to be frustrated with this designation,” Carney wrote, noting that the State Education Department is in the process of revising standards and assessments again.
The district is holding an informational meeting for interested parents and guardians on Wednesday, June 7 at 6 p.m. at the High School. Carney and assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction Christine Tona will speak and answer questions.
Parents of students at one of the designated elementary schools can choose to send their children to Aquebogue Elementary under “school choice” requirements under state law, Carney wrote.
The superintendent said the district is proud of its programs and accomplishments and will continue to strive to provide the very best education for all of our students.
