Lace up your sneakers and get ready to walk for a good cause later next Sunday.

The 19th annual 5k Walk For Breast Cancer Awareness will step off at Tanger Outlet Center at 9 a.m.

The annual 5K walk raises money and awareness for the North Fork Breast Health Coalition by encouraging participants to solicit pledges of support from friends, family and colleagues. Top fundraising awards will be given in four categories: young adult (13-19 years old), adult, business/team and breast cancer survivor.

The 5k will be held in the parking lot at Tanger Outlet Center in Riverhead. Same-day registration will be open from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. A continental breakfast will be available during registration, which will include bagels, muffins and fruit. At 8:45 there will be an opening ceremony during which Riverhead Town Councilman James Wooten will deliver an invocation.

There will also be an opportunity to buy raffle tickets for dozens of prizes donated by Tanger Outlet stores and other local businesses.

One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, according to the National Breast Cancer organization. The organization’s website says, “breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women. Each year it is estimated that over 246,660 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die. Although breast cancer in men is rare, an estimated 2,600 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 440 will die each year. On average, every two minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer and one woman will die of breast cancer every 13 minutes. Over 2.8 million breast cancer survivors are alive in the United States today.”

The NFBHC is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, which supports local breast-cancer patients with programs like Helping Hand grants. Funds raised by the event will also allow the group to continue providing free services to patients, including yoga, massage therapy, reflexology and support groups for both breast cancer patients and survivors.
