The Riverhead Blue Waves held on for a big win against Smithtown East yesterday 12-7 at McKillop Memorial Field.
Blue Waves quarterback Christian Pace completed nine passes, for two touchdowns — one to Dean Koukounas and one to Tommy Powers, who made a great leaping grab in the end zone. Riverhead running back Lawrence Bishop was solid, with some -pounding runs and also led Riverhead with seven tackles. Riverhead had six total sacks.
With the score 12-7 and about three minutes left on the clock, Smithtown East was deep in Riverhead territory when Patrick Pettit came up with a game-saving interception to secure the win for the Blue Waves.
Riverhead improved to 2-1 in Division II. The Waves travel to Dix Hills on Thursday to take on undefeated Half Hollow Hills East (3-0). Riverhead’s next home game is Saturday, Oct. 7 (1:30 p.m. kickoff) when Newfield comes to town.
