A bicyclist was hit by a car yesterday afternoon at the intersection of Edwards Avenue and River Road in Calverton, according to Riverhead Town Police.

The cyclist was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of injuries police said were believed not life-threatening.

Police said Nelson Aaron, 58, of Newburgh, N.Y. was northbound on Edwards Avenue and attempted to make a left turn onto River Road when he was struck by a northbound 2002 Nissan operated by Julio David Duarte, 51, of Riverhead at about 1:40 p.m. yesterday.

Responding officers found Aaron, who was thrown from his bicycle upon impact, lying in the roadway, according to a Riverhead Town Police press release issued last night.

Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Aaron to Stony Brook. Duarte remained at the scene and was later issued a summons for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, police said.

Both the bicycle and the vehicle were impounded by police for a safety check.
