Riverhead was solid today against a less skilled West Islip team. The Waves passing was crisp, their defense was like a stone wall, and their shooting was spot on.
The first goal, on a shot by 4 Kayla Kielbasa, looked like a trick shot, as she got off a solid shot that ricocheted off of two West Islip players before hitting the goalie in the helmet, and having the ball roll over her head into the cage, Rease Coleman got the assist. Their second goal came on a blistering shot by Angie Graziano, from about 20 yards out that found its way to the back of the cage. Coleman and Kielbasa got the assists. West Islip managed to gain the Riverhead zone a few times in the first half, but had no luck setting up a shot. The first half ended at 2-0.
The second half was more of the same as Riverhead continued to dominate the play on the field. Following a close-in scoring attempt by Riverhead, Coleman was awarded a penalty shot after the West Islip defender held the ball in the goal crease, she easily scored with a nice knee-high shot past the West Islip keeper to make it 3-0.
Final seconds ticked away, as the final horn sounded and Riverhead swarmed their goal keeper Victoria Stapon, who earned the shutout.
Next up for Riverhead is number two seeded Eastport/South Manor Lady Sharks on Friday, at 2:30 p.m. at Eastport High School.
