The Riverhead Faculty Community Theater’s production of Gypsy opens tonight at Riverhead High School and runs through November 19.
Gypsy tells the story of ambitious showbiz mother Rose, who travels the country with her daughters in search of success, putting on a homespun vaudeville act. Rose is forced to face the changing times as vaudeville is replaced by burlesque and her daughters grow older.
Gypsy was written by Arthur Laurents, with music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. It was inspired by the memoirs of Gyspy Rose Lee.
Performances will be on Nov. 10, 11, 17 and 18 at 7 p.m., and on Nov. 12 and 19 at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $15 online and for $20 at the door. Students can buy discounted tickets for $5 with ID, and Veterans with ID can see the show for free on Veterans Day.
