A brush fire along the property line of Riverhead High School was quickly stamped out by Riverhead firefighters Monday afternoon.
Generating large clouds of smoke and stoked by high winds, the fire smoldered in fallen brush and leaves along a fence at the rear of the high school property.
Firefighters made sure the brush fire did not spread beyond the fence, which borders the parking lot of the Big Lots shopping center on Route 58.
Staff at Riverhead High School alerted the fire department to the brush fire around 1 p.m. today.
The cause of the fire is not known and is under investigation, according to Riverhead Fire Department Chief Kevin Brooks.
