Mattituck defeated McGann-Mercy 58-52 to win the Suffolk “B-C” Small School Championship today at Centereach High School.

Mercy started slow, scoring only five points in the first quarter against a quick Mattituck squad. But they began to get their rhythm and found open players down low for easy baskets, also hitting several three-point shots from the arc. Mattituck took a 27-20 lead over Mercy into the locker room.

The second half was a different story as Mercy’s momentum carried into the third quarter, with both teams trying to contain each other’s top players. Mercy’s Melina Santacroce was a beast driving the paint, scoring baskets and getting the foul call to complete the three-point play. Mattituck’s Liz Dwyer was no slouch either, driving the lane and hitting five three-point shots. Going into the fourth quarter, Mercy was nipping at Mattituck’s heels. They got to within four points, even outscoring them 17-13 in the quarter, but Mattituck held on for the win 58-52 for the Suffolk “B-C” crown.

Mercy vies for the Long Island crown on Wednesday, March 7 at 7 p.m. at Suffolk County Community College/Brentwood, where they face Nassau champs East Rockaway. Tickets are $7.
