A major coastal low will bear down to the Northeast today, bringing heavy rain and high winds to our area today through Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in New York.
North-northeast winds of 25 to 40 mph with gusts up to 70 mph may down trees and power lines, causing outages, according to the National Weather Service, which has issued a high wind warning. The warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. tomorrow.
Heavy rainfall will cause minor to moderate flooding today and tonight, with ponding on roadways, Riverhead Town Police said in a statement last night.
Snow will mix with rain before ending Saturday morning. Little or no accumulation is expected.
Tides will be one and one-half to three feet above normal on top of the astronomical high tides. A coastal flood warning is in effect from 6 p.m. today until 2 a.m.tomorrow and again from 6 a.m. tomorrow until 2 a.m. Sunday.
Residents in flood-prone areas should pay close attention, Riverhead Town Supervisor Laura Jens-Smith said in a weather statement and travel advisory.
A storm warning is in effect for the waters of Long Island Sound. The weather is disrupting ferry services today; several departures from Orient and New London have been canceled.
The storm is disrupting flights in and out of regional airports.
Motorists should leave extra time and reduce speeds. Do not drive into standing water, the town supervisor said.
