If you’ve needed to transact business at the Riverhead office of the Department of Motor Vehicles in the past month, you likely learned the hard way you were out of luck. The office has been closed for renovations since March 1.
The state agency informed residents of the closure with signs on the doors of its Old Country Road facility and a notice posted on its website.
This morning, a steady stream of would-be DMV customers approached the building entrance and turned away in frustration — some angrily.
A Greenport man looking to renew his driver’s license lamented about having to make an unexpected trip to Medford to get it done, while a woman from East Hampton, who was holding license plates she said she needed to return, said she’d wait until the office reopens.
Its scheduled reopening is Monday, April 2.
A construction worker at the site, where interior remodeling has been taking place, said people were “pretty much constantly” coming to the door, unaware that the facility was temporarily closed.
DMV spokesperson Tim O’Brien said this afternoon that the Riverhead office will reopen as scheduled on Monday.
Residents who need to transact business in person before Monday will need to travel to the DMV office in Medford or Port Jefferson.
