Riverhead Central School District has heightened security measures in place today following a threat posted on a social media website, Superintendent Dr. Aurelia Henriquez announced in a recorded call to sent out to parents this morning.

“Very early this morning the Riverhead Central School District administration was notified of a generic nonspecific threat against the school district found on a social media website,” Henriquez said. “The Suffolk County Police Department and Riverhead Police deemed the threat non-credible,” the superintendent said.

The district and police are still investigating the origin of the threat, the superintendent said.

Riverhead Police Chief David Hegermiller said the threat was reported to SCPD by a resident of the Fifth Precinct last night.

Suffolk Police turned it over to Riverhead, he said.

The reporting party was a youth but the threat, while it mentioned Riverhead, did not specifically mention Riverhead schools, Hegermiller said.

“It was very vague,” the chief said. “You do your best to track it down.”

Henriquez said the district “takes all incidents and comments very seriously.”

“The safety of students and staff is our first priority,” she said in the robocall message. “As an extra precaution, security will be heightened across the district today.”
