Sixty-seven-year Jamesport Fire Department member, ex-chief John Anderson was laid to rest today at St. Isidore Cemetery in Riverhead following a funeral Mass at St. Isidore’s Church.
Anderson, 85, died July 25 at Peconic Bay Medical Center.
A Jamesport Fire Department engine carrying the casket led a funeral procession that included a truck from Anderson’s paving company, East End Asphalt.
Anderson joined the Jamesport Fire Department on June 1, 1951, serving for nearly seven decades, including in leadership positions as lieutenant, captain, deputy chief and, in 1968 and 1969, chief of the department. He was elected to the Jamesport Fire District’s board of commissioners in 1983 and served as a commissioner through 1999. He was also a Suffolk County fire coordinator.
Anderson was also a life member of the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
He was a family man with a heart for community service. In addition to volunteering with the fire and emergency medical services, he was a member of the Riverhead Moose Lodge, the St. Isidore’s Parents Club, which he served as president, the Mercy High School Booster Club, the Riverhead Slow Pitch league and Riverhead PAL football.
