The Riverhead Animal Shelter has a new agility course to exercise and train its dogs, thanks to a Wading River teen.
Hunter Pozgay, 17, a member of Boy Scout Troop 161 of Shoreham, built and donated the agility course as part of his effort to become an Eagle Scout.
Hunter, a lifelong Scout, said he’s “a huge dog lover” and wanted to do something for the animals at the town shelter on Youngs Avenue. He contacted shelter operator North Fork Animal Welfare League to ask what he could do and they suggested an agility course, Hunter said.
“I researched agility course design and construction online,” Hunter said.
The course he built, with the assistance of fellow troop members, consists of wave poles, a hoop, an A-frame, jump bars and a see-saw.
Fellow Scouts from Troop 261 helped Hunter transport and assemble the agility course yesterday at the shelter on Youngs Avenue. He said he enjoyed seeing the project come together as they set up the various components of the agility course.
Hunter, who is entering his junior year at Riverhead High School, said his favorite subject is “definitely science,” especially animal science and astronomy.
He said he hopes to attain Eagle Scout rank at an Eagle Court of Honor next year.
Hunter is the son of Lisa and Curt Pozgay of Wading River.
