The Peconic Bay Power Squadron is offering two courses in safe boating practices next month. One focuses on how to handle emergencies on board. The other is a state-mandated class required of watercraft operators.

Attendees at “Emergencies On Board” will learn how to adequately prepare for common emergencies and deal with them when they occur. They will gain practical knowledge about accident prevention, running aground, onboard fires, getting lost, towing, medical emergencies and more.

The class is scheduled for Feb. 9 from 10 a.m. to noon at West Marine, 1089 Old Country Rd., Riverhead. The cost is $35. Click here to register online. For more information, contact Vince Mauceri at 631-725-3679 before Feb. 2.

Successfully completing “Americas Boating Course” will certify that boat operators are in compliance with the NYS boater education law. The class covers boating law, safety equipment, safe boating practices, navigation, boating emergencies, personal watercraft, charts, GPS, trailering and more. Attendees will receive a 244-page America’s Boating Course manual, companion CD and, after passing an exam, a completion certificate. Many insurance companies offer discounts to boaters who earn their completion certificate.

The four two-hour classes take place at the Southampton Senior Center, 25 Ponquogue Ave., Hampton Bays on successive Wednesdays beginning Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. The rest of the classes are scheduled for Feb. 13, 20 and 27. The fee is $50 and students must be at least 10 years old on or before Feb. 27. Click here to register online. For more information, contact Vince Mauceri at 631-725-3679 before Jan. 23.
