Pier Avenue is closed to traffic to all but local residents today for drainage repair work being done on the north end of the road.

Riverhead Highway crews are replacing a collapsed drainage pipe under the road, Highway Superintendent George Woodson said this morning. The pipe drains an overflow pond, Woodson said.

Woodson said he expects the work, which started early this morning, to take most of the day. There won’t be access to Iron Pier Beach while work continues.
