A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect in Suffolk County until 9 p.m. tonight, the National Weather Service said in a statement this afternoon.
The severe thunderstorm watch is also in effect for Nassau and NYC, as well Westchester, Putnam, Orange and counties upstate.
The unstable weather is the result of an approaching cold front from the west.
“The main threat with any thunderstorms today will be strong, damaging winds and hail. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out, especially north of NYC,” the National Weather Service said.
