A high wind warning is in effect until 6 p.m. today, with west winds of 20-30 mph and gusts of up to 65 mph forecast for Long Island and the tri-state region.
The National Weather Service issued the warning at 12:45 a.m. today, as a strengthening low pressure system continues to lift away to the northeast. Peak wind gusts are expected this afternoon.
“Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles,” the weather service said in a statement.
PSEG-LI is already reporting power outages affecting more than 13,000 customers across the island overnight, including more than 100 in Riverhead, most along Sound Shore Road in Northville.
The Long Island Railroad says service is suspended between Mattituck and Greenport due to a tree and wires leaning over the tracks east of Mattituck.

A storm warning is in effect for the eastern Long Island Sound through this afternoon. The marine forecast from the National Weather Service calls for west winds of 25 to 30 kt with gusts up to 50 kt. And seas of 4 to 7 ft.
Cross Sound Ferry has canceled all high-speed ferry crossings today, as well as several auto ferries between Orient and New London.
About an inch rain fell in the local area, according to the National Weather Service. Scattered showers are possible today but overall cloudy skies are forecast with highs in the mid- to upper-50s.
