Heavy rain, strong winds and hazardous gusts caused significant damage across Long Island last night, PSEG-LI said this morning.
More than 17,000 people remain without power this morning, about 250 customers in Riverhead Town and nearly 800 in Southold, according to the utility company. A downed tree on East Main Street took down power lines and knocked out power to the Riverside Drive area, affecting 127 customers there, according to PSEG-LI, which says service is estimated to be restored by 8 p.m.
A wind advisory remains in effect until noon today, with southwest to west winds 15 to 30 mph gusting up to 50 mph, according to the National Weather Service. The high wind warning has been canceled.
A freeze watch is in effect overnight tonight, when temperatures are expected to dip into the mid-30s locally and into the 20s and 30s in other parts of the island.
