(UPDATED – 6:13 p.m.) Suffolk County Police Homicide detectives are investigating skeletal remains found in Riverhead this morning.

The remains were found in a wooded area on property adjacent to the grounds of St. John Paul II Regional School on Marcy Avenue, according to Suffolk County Police.

Homicide Squad detectives were notified at 10:15 a.m. Investigators have determined the cause of death was non-criminal, according to police. Identification is being withheld pending notification of kin.

The deceased was a male in his 20s.

A spokesperson for the Diocese of Rockville Centre said the diocese is cooperating with police during the investigation.

Correction: This article has been updated to correct information initially provided by the Suffolk County Police Department, which said this afternoon the remains were found on property at 515 Marcy Avenue, which is the address of St. John Paul II Regional School. The Suffolk County Police Department public information office later corrected that information.
