A flood watch for this region has been extended until 2 a.m. Aug. 24, the National Weather Service said in a statement this morning.
A widespread 2 to 4 inches of additional rainfall is possible across the region, the weather service said. Localized higher amounts will be possible through tonight.
“Another round of rain expected today through the evening associated with Henri, which is now a tropical depression,” NWS forecasters in Upton said. “As the system pivots from eastern Pennsylvania into southern New England, showers and embedded thunderstorms will become increasingly likely through the day,” according to the NWS forecast discussion posted online this morning.
The stronger storms will more likely be over the central/eastern portions of Long Island and Connecticut, according to the discussion. Rainfall rates of a half-inch to two inches per hour are possible, forecasters said. “The flood watch has been extended… as soils remain quite saturated from the previous day’s rain and will not need much rain for flooding.”
Today will be otherwise mostly cloudy, with a high near 81, and south winds of 8 to 15 mph, according to the NWS forecast. The chance of precipitation is 60%.
