A Riverhead man has been charged with attempting to rob Barth’s Drug Store on East Main Street this morning.

Police said they received a panic alarm and a 911 call at 10:28 a.m. reporting a robbery at the pharmacy.

The complainant reported a white male wearing a mask entered the store, displayed a box cutter and another sharp object and demanded prescription drugs, according to a police press release issued lat this afternoon.

Responding officers found the suspect still inside the store. When he was approached by police, he fled the scene on foot with no proceeds, police said. Police apprehended the suspect after a short foot pursuit, according to the release.

The suspect was identified as Vito Piazza, 31, police said. He was taken into custody and transported to police headquarters for arrest processing. Piazza was charged with one count of Attempted Robbery in the First Degree and held for arraignment.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. A person charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
