Riverhead Police have filed an additional charge against the man accused of burglarizing Lowe’s Home Improvement Center on Route 58 Thursday night.

Police have now charged Terry Smith, 58, of Riverhead, with one count of Grand Larceny in the Third Degree in connection with an incident at the same store on Nov. 10. Police did not provide details about the alleged prior theft. Grand Larceny in the Third Degree is a Class D felony under the New York State Penal Law.

Smith was already in custody following his arrest yesterday on a burglary charge stemming from an incident at the Riverhead Lowe’s late Thursday night. Police said Smith, at about 11:20 p.m. Thursday, used a large piece of steel to smash two of the front doors at Lowe’s to gain entry to the store, which was closed. He then removed assorted tools from shelves in the store, police said. A store manager found the broken glass doors early Friday morning and called police.

Police identified Smith by reviewing the store’s surveillance video and arrested him at the Greenview Motel on West Main Street yesterday, according to a press release issued yesterday. Smith was held for arraignment on the burglary charge, police said.

He was held overnight for arraignment in Riverhead Justice Court, police said in the second press release issued last night.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. A person charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
