The arrival of Memorial Day weekend is celebrated as the unofficial start of summer and in Riverhead, that means town beaches will be open for the season tomorrow.

Riverhead Town beaches will be staffed with attendants and lifeguards on weekends only until June 25, when they will be open seven days a week through Labor Day. Beach hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The town maintains and operates four beaches. One beach, South Jamesport Beach, is located on the Peconic Bay, while the other three town beaches are located on the Long Island Sound: Iron Pier Beach in Northville, Reeves Beach in Riverhead and Wading River Beach in Wading River.

Parking permits are required at all town beach facilities from Feb. 1 to Dec. 31. Seasonal permits are currently available to Riverhad Town residents only. Non-residents are permitted to purchase day passes.

Permits for parking only are $20 for the season, $5 for seniors 60+. Permits for veterans, fire department and EMS volunteers are free.

Permits may be purchased from an attendant at any beach from opening until 3 p.m. by cash or credit card. Purchases after 3 p.m. are by credit card only.

Acceptable proofs of residency are:

  • A Riverhead Town tax bill with a residential service address. The name must match your vehicle registration. No post office box addresses.
  • A utility bill with a residential service address. Name must be the same as vehicle registration.

Seniors must in addition present proof of age. Veterans must, in addition to proof of residency, present copy of DD214 or vet status.

Permits are available at either of the Riverhead Parks and Recreation office locations during normal operating hours. Permits also be purchased online. Stickers will be mailed out.
