An 18-year-old Riverhead man was charged with driving while intoxicated following a single-car crash on East Main Street early this morning that injured four people, one seriously.
Riverhead Town Police said one of the injured passengers in a 2007 Honda van that left the roadway and crashed into a tree was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
The driver of the vehicle, identified by police as Geobani David Cano, 18, of Riverhead, was not injured, according to a police press release. Cano was arrested on a charge of Driving While Intoxicated, police said. He was held for arraignment today in Riverhead Justice Court, police said.
The crash occurred at about 1:15 a.m. near 469 East Main Street, police said. There were a total of five occupants in the vehicle, including the driver, according to the report. All four passengers were injured, police said. In addition to the person airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital by Suffolk County Police, two other passengers were transported to Stony Brook by ambulance. The fourth passenger was taken by ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries.
The Riverhead Detective Division and the New York State Police Accident Investigation Unit assisted with the investigation, which is ongoing at this time, according to the press release.
