Suffolk County Transit has launched a weekday express bus route between Riverhead and Hicksville, offering commuters limited-stop service along the Long Island Expressway for $2.25 per trip.

The Long Island Express began operating Oct. 26, with westbound trips during the morning peak period and eastbound return trips in the afternoon. Buses use the expressway’s HOV lane.

Morning trips begin at the Riverhead Long Island Rail Road station and end at the Hicksville LIRR station. Afternoon trips depart from Hicksville and conclude in Riverhead. The service does not operate on weekends or holidays, according to the county announcement.

The route includes stops in Medford, Farmingville, Ronkonkoma, Islandia and Hauppauge, as well as the Route 110 park-and-ride and Broadway Mall, according to Suffolk County Transit’s route information.

County Executive Ed Romaine, who announced the launch of the Long Island Express on Monday, said the route is intended to help ease traffic congestion and give East End residents another commuting option.

“With the Long Island Express, motorists now have another sensible option to commute from the East End to the west in a simple and convenient manner,” Romaine said.

The $2.25 fare is Suffolk County Transit’s standard full fare. Bus and LIRR fares are paid separately, with no transfer fare arrangement between the two systems. Riders can purchase mobile tickets through Suffolk County Transit’s FastFare app.
